Azkatraz thingie

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
So the CfP went up for Azkatraz, and...
and..

the first three suggested topics they have up are GLBT issues, heternormativity in the HP books, and slash. WTF CON, DID YOU ACTUALLY NOTICE US?

*grins*

Dammit, now I kind of want to do more programming. But I'll probably enjoy it more if I attend other people's...

Drabbles

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
While hanging out in the Room of Requirement at Terminus, I solicited some prompts and pairings from the other people at the table. All of them are NSFW so, you know, don't click if that bothers you.

Snarry, prompt: Draco )

Dobby/Stan Shunpike, prompt: dragon )

Snape/Filch, prompt: hair products )

Also, it has been so long since I used a mood icon that I'd forgotten I had a Goldie from Sandman scheme.

TED Talks

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Since its inception, I have subscribed to the podcast TED Talks. They're a series of videos (generally 18-20 minutes, with some outliers) from the TED conference (Technology, Entertainment, and Design). That's only a loose description; the conferences seem to be more "I found a person with a neat idea, and now I'm going to let them tell you about it." The talks cover a broad range of topics and viewpoints, and it's rare that I don't feel I've learned something from watching them. You may have seen some of them linked elsewhere--one by Jill Bolte Taylor, a neuroscientist who had a stroke, was widely disseminated, although I didn't personally care for it.

Every once in a while, one pops up that I feel a need to keep around because I think I'll watch it again or show it to other people. Behind the cut, a list of the ones I've kept, with descriptions--think of it as a rec list of the archives.

No videos behind the cut, by the way, just links to the pages where the videos are (they start playing automatically if you click on the links).

Snail mail

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I have ten stamps that won't be good any more as of May 12, and no use for them. Anybody living in the U.S. want a letter? (Sorry, overseas folks, but I don't have spare international stamps lying around, and I am cheap.) Leave address in comments, which are screened.

In grad school, you learn stuff

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
such as, "In the rain, while holding an umbrella, I can solve a Rubik's cube in less time than it takes to walk around my building the long way from one entrance to the other."

Whether this means I work in a large building, solve Rubik's cubes quickly, or walk very slowly, I will leave for you to decide.

Movie nattering

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I just watched Children of Men and...hey, that was little Charlie Hunnam with the dreads? Nathan! You're all grown up! ...actually, looking at his imdb page, it occurs to me it's silly calling him "little Charlie Hunnam" when he's older than me. Ah well.

Actually, though, the point of this post was to talking about The Crying Game, which I also just saw. I have to say...I didn't particularly care for it. If anyone wants to discuss why they did/didn't like it, I'd be interested to hear! (There will, undoubtedly, be spoilers in the comments...)

Ho. Lee. &*#$.

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
So I just put in "Hocus Pocus", which is an awful movie I adored as a child, and I'm sitting there looking at random early/mid-90s-style boys running around, when--

OH MY GOD IT'S MCGEE FROM NCIS.

*blink blink*

Well, I thought he looked familiar...

Today's challenge

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Give me a really narrow segment of fandom in which you are a BNF. I.e., "I am the BNF of Dobby slash." "I am the BNF of time-travel Snape fics involving cheese."

And thus I read once more

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
1. All of those who knew enough to beat me about the head until I read His Majesty's Dragon, I hereby beat YOU about the head for not doing so.

2. Books sometimes creep into my subconscious. A couple of mornings ago, I was trying to decide when to set my alarm for (after deciding I could sleep longer). I thought "Oh, I could have my dragon take me up to school!" Then it occurred to me that was silly. I mean, after all, he'd have nowhere to land!

Needless to say, when I actually did wake up, this train of thought cracked me up. :D

Coming full circle

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
When you're young, you do math with pictures. Like apples! Two apples plus one apple is four apples. Then you start writing it in numbers: 2+2=4. Then you add letters: a+b=c. Then you do it in Greek letters: α+β=ε. And then, apparently, you come back round to pictures. Here's a line from my notes from class today:

Oh dear.
